Longchamp reimagines its '90s iconic bag
By JOHN LEGASPI
For its spring/summer offering, French luxury brand Longchamp envisions a solar journey from dusk to dawn. Think of wild escapades under sunlight in a California desert—hot, pulsing subtly and seductively. Its collection features wild florals in maxi dresses, sunset-hued dye treatments, tinted leatherwork, and breezy sleeves, all apt for a fun time under the sun. The runway show also featured vintage accessories as its finishing touch—the Roseau bags.
Since 1948, Longchamp, a leather-sheathed pipe manufacturer, has expanded its savoire-faire to include travel accessories and handbags. With its current artistic director Sophie Delafontaine, Longchamp aims to perpetuate its leather heritage, and develop its vision of luxury for the contemporary consumer.
A throwback from the past, the Roseau, a French word meaning “reed” in English, is Longchamp’s most emblematic bag. It was revolutionary when it was first launched in the 1990s with its streamlined trapezoid silhouette, and an open-tote feature. For spring-summer 2020, the bag line has been reimagined to different proportions while retaining its iconic elements.

Understated and not overly embellished, the revamped Roseau features removable straps, and the brand’s iconic bamboo clasp. The bag retains its open-tote structure, and is made of luxe Barenia calfskin, which develops a patina and becomes more attractive over time.
The bag’s mini edition is made for a younger, cooler, and refreshing vibe. Do not judge the bag by its size. This compact-sized Roseau is easy to carry, with ample space to fit everyday essentials. For versatility, the bag comes with removable shoulder straps for dual ways of carriage.
For a more casual and athleisure vibe, the Roseau line also comes in souple hobo buckle bag, and clutch in pristine white with black lacing for closure.
Launching the revisited line globally, Longchamp tapped US supermodel Kendall Jenner with photographer Columbine Goldsmith and stylist Amélie Sauvé for its summer campaign. With its feel-good vibe, infused with warmth and energy, the image speaks to the vision of the modern Longchamp woman in high noon light.
Longchamp is located at Greenbelt 5, Rustan’s Shangri-La, Rustan’s Makati and Rustan’s Cebu. Follow @ssilifeph on Instagram for more information.
