Sam gets his dream role
Sam Concepcion is leading the cast of the 2020 version of Joseph the Dreamer, one of Trumpets’ biggest original productions, with a book written by Freddie Santos and first seen on stage in 1989.
Set to run from Feb. 21 to March 7 at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in BGC, Taguig, the biblical story of Joseph is a timeless tale of love, forgiveness, hope and faith in God.
On the hot seat of Tonight with Boy Abunda (TWBA), Sam expressed his excitement over portraying the titular role that was played by Audie Gemora in earlier runs and he now returns as Joseph’s father, Jacob.
“It’s the dream role, pun intended,” began the 27-year-old actor and proceeded to sing some lines of Lead Me, his favorite song from Joseph the Dreamer, “Lead me along the path / lead me along the winding way / I trust enough to never need the why if you take me to the where / lead me along the path / lead me along the winding way / I don’t know what’s around the corner Lord but I know that you’ll be there.”
Sam admitted that he was initially a bit hesitant in portraying Joseph knowing how big a responsibility it would be to bring to life such character.
Good thing, he was able to overcome his doubts upon learning that Paolo Valenciano is directing the musical play. They both started as performers in several productions of Trumpets. Paolo is also the brother of Sam’s former girlfriend Kianna.
“Paolo also directed my concerts before Kianna and I got together. Do I miss her? Yes, in a friendly way. We are friends but probably it’s not na ganung level you know, pero siguro time will heal all of that. And I’m the type na pwede kaming maging friends kasi sayang yung meron kayong pinagsamahan out of a romantic relationship,” he shared.
Sam likewise shared that he is part of HBO Asia’s dark action fantasy series Halfworlds with Bianca Umali, along with cast members from previous seasons. It’s the first Philippine-based series for HBO Asia that is slated to have eight episodes.
“We are in the very early stages of shooting,” said Sam regarding his work for the series’ third season with director Mikhail Red. HBO Asia and Cignal TV are the producers of the latest season.
Meanwhile, Sam revealed who among today’s female stars he would like to be paired with in the show’s Yes, No or Maybe portion:
Julia Barretto — “Yes, definitely I want to work with her again. We were together in Mirabella before.”
Barbie Imperial — “I would say yes.”
